The occipital lobes is the primary location of visual processing.

When the eyes are open and the body is awake, the occipital lobes provide the primary visual processing function for the eyes. However, then the eyes are closed and the body is in a REM state or relaxed state, the same region is used to help project visual information produced by the brain itself via the thalamus acting as the "inner sight" .
